On Saturday, January 22, 2021, Michelle E. L. Maldonado was sworn in as representative for the 50th District in the Virginia House of Delegates. Maldonado replaces Del. Lee Carter, who had previously held the seat since 2017.
Maldonado expressed gratitude to the community for making the historic day possible.
“I am proud to be the first woman and first person of color in the history of our Commonwealth to serve in this seat,” Maldonado said. “I take seriously my duty and privilege to represent all Virginians—regardless of party, perspective, or background—so that we can ensure a safer, better, and more connected Commonwealth for everyone.”
Maldonado’s son Trey and husband Robert joined her at the dais as Clerk Paul Nardo officiated at the swearing in. The moment was celebrated by a crowd of family, friends, neighbors, and supporters.
